Blacksmiths use tongs to handle hot metal. They look like a large set of pliers. Working blacksmiths usually have a large variety for different tasks. Check out the link below for some pictures.
One version of a pair of tongs is a "v-shaped" squeeze-actuated
tool with two cup-like "grabbers" at the end (for picking up things like hot dogs on the grille). ;)
Probably a blacksmith they used them back in the day to remove metal from the coals and fire.

I think they are rather like large rounded scissor type implements, used for lifting hot metal during shaping processes--the kind of thing a blacksmith might use.
Masons use brick tongs for picking up multiple bricks at one time.
